The Female Brain 101: Pick up a Pen, Cop a Squat and Take Notes.

TwitThis

Dr. Louann Briendine breaks down the women, men, communications and hormones in her book The Female Brain.

Her general thesis is that because of evolution women are hard wired, and largely regulated by hormones, to pay attention to non verbal cues, emotional expressions and body language, because THEY are historically primarily responsible for and ensuring the survival of infant babies, who incidently CAN'T talk.

Peep these fact nuggets.

  • In the brain centers for language and hearing, for example, women have 11 percent more neurons than men. The principal hub of both emotion and memory formation- the hippocampus- is also larger in the female brain, as is the brain circuitry for language and observing emotions in others. This means that women are , on average, better at expressing emotions and remembering the details of emtotional events.
  • Men by contrast have two and half times the brain space devoted to sexual drive as well as larger brain centers for action and aggression.
  • At the 8th week of fetal development, the fetus experiences a "a huge testosterone surge" which will turn the "unisex brain male by killing off some of the cells in the communication centers and growing more cells n the sex and agression cetners. If the testosterones surge doesn't happen, the femal brain continutes to grow unperterbed.
  • The emotional gatekeeper is the amygdala, an almond shaped structure located deep within the brain. Part of the reason why a womans memory is better for emotional details is that her amydala is more easily activated by emotional nuance. The stronger the amygdala response to a stressfull situation such as an accident or a threat, a romantic dinner, the more detials the hippocampus will take memory storage about the experience.
  • Because of ancient wiring, men are used to avoiding contact with others when they themselves are going through an emotionaly rough time. They process their troubles alone and think women would want to do the same. Periscope down: submarine dives twenty fathoms to solve it alone.

This has always been part of my theory of why people are gay. I really dont know if there is any scientific theory on the subject. but i always thought, since we all start off as women in the beginning, then Two thirds of the way through the first trimester we beginning to develop into our sex, then that would be the reason why we have gay males. because obviously they didnt fully develop beyond the initial female stage. and i guess the same can be said for women. maybe they begin the process of becoming males, but never quite finish the process. for some reason it feels as if im stating the obvious or something. but ive always thought that in the back of my head, since the first time i found out we all start out as women.

I didnt get what you meant by "submarine dives twenty fathoms to solve it alone."

You asked me before i been.Well ive been good. gettin a good amount of work into the home studio i got set up. but soon im gonna get another job. I put 4 of my songs on myspace recently. check em out and let me know what you think. Cool post

Did you read this book already. If so, let me know what you thought about it. I might wanna have my librarian order it for me.

Yes. I read the book allready.

The submarine metaphor was used by the author. I think she intended it to be a metaphor for "going at it alone".

I will check out your new songs. It is good to hear that you are being productive.

Testosterone and gayness.
a. This is uncharted territory.
b. My counter arguement would be that gay folks are gay because they find the same sex attractive and not nesecarrily because of "hormonal" development.

c. My question for you is how is the fact that we all start of as female related to how a man becomes gay? Especially if we all evolve on the xx or the xy track in the womb?

d. You are not the first person to respond to my comment with the "gay" theory. It makes me wonder if connecting gayness to the fact that we were all female in the womb is a subconsious, knee jerk reaction to the fact that they were, for 8 weeks, a girl.

at the moment i have no real sound basis for my theory. i just always thought that had something to do with it.obviously men are attracted to women, and vice versa. not saying they are supposed to be, but this has been the way to procreate since forever. now since we start off as women and develope into men and/or women, it might make sense that, since a man goes from being a woman, to being a man, he might have instilled in him, female tendancies if the process of his development didnt quite fully take its course. tendancies to be attracted to other men, men wanting to dress as women, or actually change their physically make up to actually become more like a woman. same thing with women. maybe they started the process to become males, but the process just didnt fully take its course.

but i definitely hear what you saying about someone just being attracted to the same sex. HOmosexuality i think can also spawn from maybe something psychological as well.

but aye, there no real need for me to be geting my doogie. after all, im only speculating.

I thought you were gonna talk about the dudes between academic dudes and street dudes.

As i get off the phone with my academic, unresponsive dude I clearly wanna think genetics and hormones have everything to do with the subtle nature of the female and the lack of for males. But in defining/labeling a female as woman and the male as man we have historically & socially constructed gender specific characteristics to each.

I don't know, I'm contemplating the nature/nurture theories Everyday. But based on Briendine thesis, I think that females were socialized, through historically justified suborinate roles to, "to pay attention to non verbal cues, emotional expressions and body language"

Sis you have to read the book.
I think you will love it.

She covers how hormones effect women from fetus to death.

Its crazy thorough.

She uses the fact that we are more receptive to non verbal cues, that we use more words, per day, on average than men and that as infants we recognize facial expressions more readily than boy babies.

Is Simon Baron-Cohen related to Sasha Baron-Cohen? That would be cool.

Ummmm, you asked me to bring it cause I assume you think I have an opposing view, but I actually have none. As you may remember, I have had these views for some time now as passed down form mentors and older men on how men and women see the world differently. At least once a day I say "Renina you speaking woman again". This book, which my too lazy to go to Grand Army Plaza Library ass will jes take from you when you finishing reading it, will just give me a more scientific source for my theories.

The one grumpy old man comment I will add is that I hope you and others will read the info and actually do something with it... meaning change your perception, expectations and actions. Reading something like this and still acting weird when dudes and chicas do their "thing" is sorta like reading a do not enter sign on cheetah cage and still going in when the zoo keep turns his back.

Countless Americans have read "Men Are From Mars And Women Are Jes Nuts" (tee hee hee) but still act indifferent towards the masculine/feminine differences. In a world where everyone seems to be suffering from communication issues, especially in the relationship setting, I'd love to see more consideration for each of our differences. P.S. I think it's probably healthy for us all to have a little girl inside us...

Whats deep about that sh*t is that Boys get it disproportionatly.

And, in Corporate lawyers tend to have it also, te he he he he (covers hand and snikers like Celie.)

Its like Aspergers is an exagerated version of mens inability to read facial expressions, deep.

The thing I will say about it is though that men can overcome that 'hump' and train themselves to notice stuff and get more sensitive..I believe that is possible. Now of course we won't be like y'all but at least we won't be left hung to dry yadameen?
