SJ almost deaded me a month ago.
I f*cked up. You want to know how?
Not being forth coming about L-school related credit card
debt incurred during to my first year.
My historical greasiness didn't scare him away.
Nor did my smart mouth.
Sh*t he has hung in there through the the the tumultuous
'after dee dee' era.
But that credit. Almost got me deaded.
I was not being forthcoming, I withheld the actual amount
out of shame. I just gave him the low end ball park range.
Then the sh*t hit the fan.
His rationale is how can he be stacking claypot chips
and I can't even be forth coming with him regarding
my Forever 21/Zappos/brunch/Mac store/law school supplemental
study materials from amazon debt?
I had no response.
Well. I did have a response. See. I thought had a defense.
I have taught financial literacy classes, so I KNOW BETTER.
But. A perfect credit score + law school = recipe for disaster if you
don't exercise ninjaesque financial discipline.
Especially if you buy more school than you can afford.
Word to the Access Group.
Real talk. You want to see a couple fight.
Bring up money. Or sex.
With that in mind, I wish I could see the area in our brain that
lights up when we are shopping.
In fact, I bet it is analogous to the area at that represents
sexual stimulation. Perhaps I am on to something
here.
SJ and I are cool now.
Hugged it out.
But sh*t was tight for a minute.
I mean, anyone can do
Monday morning quarter backing. I made a mistake.
An egregious one. But a mistake just the same.
At the end of the day, his question for me
was whether I can save, which I can, and perhaps
most importantly why I employed those spending
habits when I in fact knew better.
I can honestly say that it was stress, convenience
and underestimating the long term impact of it.
Like many grad students, I underestimated my ability
to remain current. Jobs that I planned for, didn't work or
internships came though, but were UNPAID.
Sh*t was real.
I was mentioning this shit to Gotty, and he
said "Credit is the Devil".
That's real talk.

What have you bought lately?
What do you plan on taking back to the store?
What up Tmr! Yes, I'm calling you AND that dress out.
What is most of your credit card debit attributed
to and how do you manage it?

I bought a Lacoste pullover & track jacket earlier today.
I don't take stuff back.
Most of my credit debt is attributed to either clothes or electronics. I manage mostly by just putting them away for awhile, take bout 4 months to pay them off and see how long I can not use them. The bad thing is that I have the numbers memorized, so I have to leave the online sites alone.

DUDE.
Zappos.
Shoeline.
Urban outfitters.
^^^ Shoe game mean.
I know about the online homies cuz THEY just store ya shit.
I actually have no credit card debt at all.
BUT i have no credit and everywhere i go people keep telling me to get a credit card. i really dont want a credit card.
i do spend alot of money and wonder where it all goes. probably mostly on food, beer and books. even if i had a card, i dont think id much shit if i didnt have the bread. being in debt to anyone or anything scares the shit out of me and causes stress. Dont need that over my head
Oh and i bought the new Boondocks book that just came out and invisible man by ralph ellison. Those were my last 2 purchases besides 65 dollars worth of gas.
You been watchin the Boondocks Dot?
Oh, you're such a COW....MOOOOOOO m.dot MOOOOOOOO!
you got me lol at work...but no one is here so it's sorta like that tree that falls in the forest. HA!
See I've come to the conclusion that if I keep the dress that fits like a glove and God Himself made just for me then that means...no new hair color that was budgeted for this month. just that simple...ima keep it at the expense of my roots growing out...ahhh sacrifice
On another note...cc debt isn't my biggest deal. The only outstanding things on my credit report are my student and auto loans. But at the same time I know that I'm not at all saving as much as I can at the current moment.
I hate being so damn fly and having people hold me to that standard of "damn TMR, even when you aren't trying you're still fly"...didja peep the ghostbusters joint...I'm bringing back the 80's ...that's okay, that's where they made me at! HA!
dang J!!!! I was SOooo about to buy Invisible Man for the umpteenth time last night but I settled on Love in the Time of Cholera and These Mean Streets by Piri Thomas...still trynna get my pre-katrini books back
oh and urbanoutfitters online is like crack for shoe addicts!
@ the minority reporter
Are those to books you just got good??? I need to add something new to the collection
Invisible man is one of the best stories i ever read. Im reading that for a second time along with Cats cradle by kurt vonnegut.
I am paying off my credit card to the tune of $200 a week right now..I only ran it up getting needed dental work, but I don't sleep well at night owing money.
In Islam debt is a weight on your soul and all debts of the departed must be paid off before you are buried, so I was raised to take the shit real serious. There is an actual prayer to protect you from debt.
I guess that's why my sister found a Law School to give her an 80% ride, and came out with less than 30k in debt.
Hell I'm the only person I know who pays over the amount of my car note a month just to pay it off sooner. I gots issues and a closet filled with shoes!
i do spend alot of money and wonder where it all goes. probably mostly on food, beer and books

Sooo good.
'Cept for mine would be food, beer and plane tickets.

Thinking of starting a MM book club.
YOU D?
@ J!!!
Yeah I liked the Piri Thomas book. Someone gave it to me during my time of Afro-Latino identity struggles. Last time I read it was about 4 yrs about, but I remember being satisfied upon completion. I've just started Love in the time of Cholera...and wanted to be finished before this wknd so that I can see the movie but...my bookmark is still on the 15th page...I gotta do better ;)
Oh...yeah I heart Invisible Man too! I read that joint like every 3 yrs or so...completely different appreciation for the book each time! Baldwin is my favorite though. It doesn't matter what dude writes...he spits hot fire!
If you haven't already, you should check out that movie, 'Maxed Out'. That shit will have you so pissed, you'll want to leave the country.
For all the Invisible Man fans out there, peep this:
