What if Public School Teachers Earned $80K out the Gate?

TwitThis

The white men ( the Libertarians) in my life, and various other hyper philosophical individuals (Harlem Gem) have encouraged me to culitivate my ability see relationships as manifestations of supply and demand. <<<**Greasy yes. Practical? UNBELIEVABLY!

This led me to wonder, what if teachers in the top 10 most populous urban public schools earned $80K minimum salary and all teachers were required to have a masters?

LA.
DC.
Bay.
Philly.
Detriot.

NO.

St. Louis.

BK.
Dallas.

What if reading, writing, science and
math were standardized across the country the way it is in China and India?

W
hat if all public officials had to send their children to PUBLIC schools?

Supply and demand fam.

Looks like there's some problems in Little Rocks Public schools

Other urban public school districts in the South have suffered through similar racial battles over leadership, aggravated by symptoms that prevail here, too: white flight, inner-city poverty and what is referred to as the “achievement gap,” the wide divergence in test results between white and black students. The gap fuels resentment and makes an anathema of any perceived administrative leaning toward white students.

The fight here has been especially bruising because of its symbolic overtones and practical implications. Though whites have deserted the schools in many other Southern cities, they have not done so to the same degree in Little Rock, where they make up about a quarter of the 23,000 students. Birmingham, Ala.; Jackson, Miss.; New Orleans and Memphis, by contrast, had white percentages in the single digits or barely above, according to 2000 Department of Education data.

Yall think I got a way w/ words, peep e-40:
"Every record label was getting at us at that time, but we fumbled the ball," says E-40, whose My Ghetto Report Card entered the Billboard album chart at No. 3 in March. "I hung on like a hubcap in the fast lane along with a few other rappers, and now it's time again. We had a 10-year drought and they went to other regions and were bypassing us like the surgery out here. But we're trendsetters, and the rap game without the Bay Area is like old folks without bingo."

CBS had to dead the Obama comments section, cuz liberal klan members been calling him a Porch Monkey. Scandless!

Dave Neiwert hits the nail on the head:

This resurgent racism likes to cloak itself in the pretense of rebellious individualism standing up to the oppression of overbearing “political correctness,” or else in academic-sounding terms that fling about misinformation regarding the sciences and sociology to construct a pseudo-rationale for what they euphemistically like to call “race realism.”

But pull the cloak aside, and the same old, decrepit racism of a century ago is there, festering like a decaying zombie who refuses to die.

Interesting.

Corrections:

You only listed 9 cities. You omitted Houston, which is waaaaAAAAAAAYYYYY bigger than the NO.

If that happened the teachers who really cared would get what they desereved. But you'd still have teachers hanging on in the back end instead of retiring. On top of that you'd get people teaching just for the money. I'd even consider it. My mom teaches now and I don't have the patience to deal with the kids. "Whip you with a strap," would stay on repeat in the ipod.

Public officials should have to put their kids in public school's though. But hell will freeze over before that happens.

I think is a good idea and if children don't do well, parents should be heald responsible.

Don't forget that teachers in other countries(sometimes) can pull out a belt if students don't behave.

For once, i'ma call bullsh*t. I've heard that argument time and again, and let it slide w/o giving it any thought. But, real talk:

"That's bullsh*t." (c) Shadow

Pay teachers something legitimate, at least $50-60K, depending on the location. Sure, you're gonna have a bunch of people run to do it. But we SHOULD want the best qualified people to teach our kids, not try to discourage them w/ low salaries, so that only people willing to enter the profession are those "who truly have the passion for this type of work."

And once you pay them a decent wage, keep out people who don't measure up. We do it to potential doctors. Lawyers, too. You don't measure up, you can't practice. We don't want incompetents operating on people and screwing them of their inalienable rights.

But somehow, when it comes to children, we think it's okay to stick our youngin's w/ someone who's between jobs and can't find a better way to pay for a three piece at Popeye's. Why can't we search for the BEST possible candidates? Don't we want MBAs, JDs and PhDs thinking, "Yeah, i could be ridiculously rich, or i could make a decent living working with the future generation"?

So yeah, i'm just not feelin' the "Everybody's gonna want to teach" argument any more.

Sorry for unloading on you, m.z.

@ stephen

First of all I considered teaching while I was getting my undergrad. But I know I don't have the patience to deal with children in a school setting. I got away with murder as a kid in school and to some degree teachers hands are tied in what they can do. I still have respect for the teacher that whipped out the zach morris cell phone on me in 8th grade and called my mom(even went to her retirement party).

Secondly, I didn't say that everyone would want to be a teacher. Just like everyone who is a doctor or lawyer didn't really want to be one, they can still be qualifed to be one. The weeding out process is more complicated, but people still slip through the cracks.

With a master's degree the people would be qualified, I didn't say pull people off the street. But you can a master's in business and get a teaching certificate. M. Dot may have implied a master's in education, but it wasn't stated.

& I didn't say everybody. I find it sad that I almost make more than my mother(who teaches special ed and has a masters), a year out of school. I'm still looking for a job in what I studied as well.

I always try to give thought to what I say, my degree in Strategic Communication almost has me conditioned to it.

I can take it Stepehen and I'm always willing to further explain my view,

It's true, r/ships are about supply and demand, we say it all the time, "what can you bring to the table?"

Dang this quote is something lovely.."This resurgent racism likes to cloak itself in the pretense of rebellious individualism standing up to the oppression of overbearing “political correctness,” or else in academic-sounding terms that fling about misinformation regarding the sciences and sociology to construct a pseudo-rationale for what they euphemistically like to call “race realism.”

Its almost Baldwinian, No?

The Issue re teacher Pay is NOT how well, the issue is paying then amounts that allow them to LIVE in the urban areas.

neo said...

You mean live comfortably in urban areas. 'Cos its one thing to live in an urban area, and another to live comfortably so I guess that's what we're all trying to figure out then...I guess it really depends on where you are as far as location.

Teacher pay down south ain't too bad really. It's something that can be lived off of quite comfy. The time off is great tho, my friends always harp on this as part of why they like what they do aside from impacting kids lives and such.

I keep cutting my comments in half..
